10th & 11th August: Woodcut Workshop

The Saturday Printmakers hosted a two-day woodcut workshop with Tasmanian Artist, Michael Schlitz on the 10th & 11th August 2019. On day one, participants learned how to select (or modify) a design best suited for carving on shina wood and how to transfer it. Participants also learned how to sharpen various woodcarving tools and several carving techniques to aid progress such as cutting with the grain of the timber. On day two, participants focused on proofing and editioning their prints. They learned how to make a registration board to allow for the correct positioning of paper, which proved vital for those choosing to do multi-layered prints for two colours or more. Printing with either a press or hand baren were used throughout the workshop.

Special thanks to Michael for travelling so far north to share his knowledge and skills with us!

Inkwell exhibition art works….

Thank you to everyone who has attended our annual exhibition, Inkwell, this past week. We are incredibly grateful for the support, positive feedback and good time vibes our exhibition has received and are looking forward to celebrating our 10-year anniversary by planning our 2020 exhibition.

As many of our members live regionally, we recognise the importance of making exhibitions digitally accessible for those who don’t live locally. The below is a showcase of a number of the works on display  Remember Inkwell runs until 25th August, see our events page for more info! For details on the name of artists and prices for works please see below.

The Saturday Printmakers exhibition, ‘Inkwell’ opened today at the Toowoomba Art Society, in conjunction with a beautiful corridor exhibition by artist Lyn Watts.

Our thanks to Beth for organising the exhibition (p.s. your caramel popcorn was a massive hit) and all the artists who contributed their work for the show. Thank you to the catering, set-up and pack-up teams for all their hardwork before and following the show. Particularly Aengus, Bill, Jess, Lorna, Noelle & Sian! We couldn’t have done it without you!

A crowd of 70+ attended and our club was fortunate enough to have Tasmanian Artist, Michael Schlitz open our exhibition. There are still a few places left in the woodcut workshop scheduled for next weekend, 10th – 11th August, so get in quick!

We were excited to see several works sell today, but their are plenty more on offer if you missed our opening today! Inwell runs until the 25th August everyday, excluding Mondays and Sunday 4th August. Please see events for when the Toowoomba Art Society gallery is open!

Opening – Saturday 3rd August @ 2pm (Toowoomba Art Society, Godsall St)

The Saturday Printmaker’s exhibition, Inkwell will be held from the 30th July -25th August 2019 at the Toowoomba Art Society, Godsall St. InkWell’ will feature over 45 works from members utilising a diverse range of printmaking mediums including: Linocut, polyester-lithography, wood engraving, and etchings. These mediums broadly fall within the categories of relief and intaglio printmaking methods.

‘InkWell’ characteristically described as a location or recess in which an ink pot is placed, is the exhibition title selected to represent the depth of work and creativity which will be on display, as well as to pay homage to the importance of ink in order for printmakers to transfer an idea from imagination to paper. We also acknowledge printmaking’s long-standing history and traditional past as a tool for aiding communication, like inkwells, with printmaking continuing to communicate new ways for contemporary, creative expression through application and adaption of traditional skills and methods.

The official opening is Saturday, 3rd August at 2pm with works ranging in price from $25 – $300.00. The club looks forward to celebrating another year of creativity with the broader community on the eve of our 10-year-anniversay in 2020. We endeavour to deliver local and interstate print swaps events and workshops by leading state and national artists throughout each year, and interested persons are always welcome to attend club events.
